Courtney Miller Architects

Firm Profile

Courtney Miler Architects was founded in 1992 with a series of exhibitions at the New England Home Show leading to a number of renovations and new house projects starting with the Williamson Residence, a deck and family room renovation, followed shortly by The House on Forte Pond - a clear demonstration of creative contemporary eclecticism, blending the best of the New England vernacular with modern site planning methods. Located on a spectacular lakeside property, the house is unusually angled in plan to take advantage of the panoramic views and natural topography of the site. A bridge connects over a walkway to a lower terrace from the garage /office to the main house, beginning the sequencing through the house from kitchen to living to den to master suite.

In 1995, the firm made a large shift toward advancing it's commitment to sustainable design principles with the creation of the Solar Farmhouse concept house which subsequently received the Quality Building Council award at the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's Building Energy 1996 conference. The Solonial built soon afterward in Lexington, MA, became the inception of New England Solar Homes, a company focused on the design of traditionally styled active and passive solar homes.

Thanks to advances in the manufacture of advanced non-toxic green materials, we regularly specify a number of the more attractive and cost-effective products such as cork and linoleum, as well as the most healthy indoor air quality ventilation techniques.

In the last three years, Courtney Miller Architects have also been involved with several commercial projects, a tenant fit-out for Cambridge TV production facilities on Western Avenue in Allston, and a facade restoration project in the Back Bay. We have extensive experience in multi-family housing design and have provided a number of design feasibility studies to area developers.

CMA Consulting Architects, Inc. is our sustainable consulting arm, which provides green building research to residential/ commercial owners, architects, and other members of the building industry. Courtney Miller, AIA is a LEED certified green consultant with the US Green Building Council and writes regularly for the New England Real Estate Journal about advances in high performance building practices.

Courtney received his undergraduate education at Columbia University, and Masters in Architecture from UCLA's School of Architecture and Urban Planning.
